LOCAL: Kerrie Steiert and Jeff Blackmon were inducted into the Panhandle Press Association Hall of Fame during their 117th PPA Convention on Saturday in Hereford. Blackmon was recognized for his history in saving rural newspapers on the brink of closure. He and wife Angela are publisher/owners of The Hereford Brand, Castro County News, Swisher County News and the County Star News in Shamrock. They would rescue The Brand from collapse in 2019. Kerrie was recognized for her longtime contributions to the local paper. Her first stint began in 1974 when she wrote headlines and proofread copy for The Hereford Brand. She would work on more than 700 editions of the local paper throughout the 1970s before a career change to the local AgriLife Extension Service. Kerrie and husband Jim would return to the paper in 2017 and have continued to entertain and inform Hereford-area readers with award-winning work……Deaf Smith County Hospital District Board of Directors meet in a regular session tomorrow afternoon at 5:30 to work through a lengthy, 13-item, agenda. They’ll hold a public hearing regarding tax abatement guidelines, look to adopt those guidelines and then look at tax abatement agreements with Intersect Power and Google LLC.
